Society of Supporters

Since its foundation in 1956, the society of supporters, "Society of Friends and Supporters of Wilhelma", has aimed at giving financial support to Wilhelma, with all its animals, plants and buildings. As a rule single projects are supported.

All this financial support is made possible by the yearly membership fees coming from members of the Society of Friends and Supporters and by donations otherwise collected.

Projects realized

• Young Animal Rearing Facilities opened in 1982, sum financed: 2 million DM
• Enclosure for Bears and Mountain Animals, opened 1991, sum financed: 3.5 million DM
• Albert-Schöchle Amazon House, opened 2000, sum financed: 7.9 million DM
• Insectarium with Butterfly Hall, opened 2002, sum financed: € 1.2 million Euro

Since 2010 a new enclosure for African apes is under construction. Half of the costs - about 8,5 million Euro - is contributed by the Society of Friends and Supporters.

Benefits for Friends and Supporters

All members of the Society of Friends are offered the following:

• Entrance to Wilhelma free of charge
• A film or slide show once a month
• A musical summer evening at Wilhelma once yearly
• Excursions to interesting zoological and botanical places in Germany or abroad

By the end of 2010 the Society already had 25,900 members.
