The Wilhelma gorillas

Wilhelma is very proud of its harmonious gorilla family, which is nine strong at present. Gorillas live in harem groups which, in the wild, can consist of up to 25 females and their offspring, and which are led by one adult male, the “silverback”. Sexually mature sons and daughters thus have to leave the group both in the wild and at the zoo – at least, as long as their own father is the boss of the harem.

Focal point of the Wilhelma gorilla family is the silverback Kibo who, although not being a macho man, is highly respected by his ladies - but maybe this is exactly due to his sunny disposition (he is a very friendly father). Three generations are represented in the group: from the multiple great-great granny Mimi down to Milele, the youngest of the group.
